Someone enters the meeting room and shrieks. I raise my head, and Flynn screams a second time when he realizes it’s just the one dead body and me. He flees the scene.

I’m alone again. I rest my cheek on the floor and stare at Grant Edwards. I take comfort in his blank eyes. It’s not like he can do anything to me.

Flynn returns with people. Cooper squats next to me. A campus police officer orders him not to touch me, but for once my old boss doesn’t follow the rules. He slides his arms beneath me. I try to tell him to lift with his legs and not his back, but the words stay caught in my throat.

“Are you hurt?” he asks, still holding me. I shake my head.

“Did you see what happened?” Web asks. I repeat my movement.

Erik bursts into the room. His gasp is thick and guttural. The campus police guy orders him to leave. Erik complies because he is, after all, still on probation.

Cooper asks for my phone as he sets me down on a table. I reach into my sweatshirt pocket. I unlock my device and tap the saved badge marked EMERGENCY in the Messages app.

ME: I tripped over a dead body.

I hit send before showing Cooper the message. His eyes bug out when he sees it. He gently takes my phone and makes a call. He addresses Pops as Mr. Birch instead of Art. One more look at the body, and I can’t hear anything else.
